Technical Standards
The development of technical standards and information management standards to allow widespread and easy access to online products, applications and services is critical to the establishment of a viable market for the generation of quality online curriculum content in schools, vocational education and training institutions, and universities.
Benefits of Technical Standards
Technical standards designed to increase the ease with which quality teaching and learning resources can be located, transferred
and used by teachers and students will:
- Increase the interoperability of networks, applications, and online information infrastructure;
- Increase access to online education and training;
- Increase the flexibility and availability of network infrastructure;
- Reduce the cost of acquiring and maintaining network infrastructure;
- Promote the international awareness and availability of Australian educational resources and services;
- Ensure that education and training in Australia can access overseas resources and services;
- Increase the efficiency and interoperability of management and administrative functions in education and training.
Functions of Interoperable Standards
Interoperable standards and specifications are fundamental to:
- The operation of learning objects and online content being developed under the auspices of The Learning Federation;
- Flexible delivery of training packages developed under the Australian Flexible Learning Framework – particularly the Toolbox
Series as the main national initiative in the development of online content in the VET sector; and - The use and development of Subject Gateways in the higher education sector.
