.edu.au Internet domain name policy and management
The .edu.au Internet domain is part of an international system that provides stability to the Internet by standardising and coordinating Internet addresses used for electronic communication. All Internet domains are governed by international agreements and policies. Stability of Internet domains is essential for business continuity. The .edu.au Internet domain is known as a ‘second level’ domain and licenses are restricted to eligible education and training bodies.
auDA is the overarching policy authority and industry self-regulating body endorsed by the Australian Government to administer and manage the .au Internet domain for all Australian Internet domain names. Through a Sub-sponsorship Agreement the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and auDA have delegated responsibility for managing and administering the .edu.au Internet domain to AICTEC. This agreement was recently extended until 30 June 2010.
auDA has accredited Education Services Australia as the Registrar for the .edu.au Internet domain. As the .edu.au Internet domain Registrar Education Services Australia provides the online registration interface for domain name applicants, approves applications, allocates .edu.au Internet domain licenses (these have a life of two years), manages the license fee system and maintains a data base of current registered .edu.au Internet domain names.
The AICTEC sub-committee (eDAC) is responsible for ongoing policy management for the .edu.au Internet domain. It provides specialist advice for all education and training sectors, manages and monitors the ongoing viability of the .edu.au Internet domain and ensures that the business and marketing requirements of .edu.au Internet domain licence holders are maintained.
eDAC will also complete the transfer of all old domain names to the new registrar.
.edu.au Domain Administration CommitteeeDAC monitors developments, contributes to major policy for, and provides advice to key agencies on issues related to monitoring and regulating the edu.au domain space.
