The Digital Education Revolution (DER) aims to contribute sustainable and meaningful change to teaching and learning in Australian schools that will prepare students for further education, training and to live and work in a digital world.

AICTEC has contributed to the development of two strategic documents which guide the DER. The DER Strategic Plan, “Success through Partnership” was developed by the Schooling Sub-group of the Council of Australian Government’s (COAG’s) Productivity Agenda Working Group. The Plan outlines a vision for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) enabled learning in Australian Schools. AICTEC’s Advice on a DER Implementation Roadmap, submitted to the Schooling Sub-group, applies that vision to describe principles, dependencies and outcomes for the DER. Together these documents provide the broader context within which the various Australian, state and territory government DER-related initiatives are being implemented.

The documents will assist educational institutions, their communities and the ICT industry to understand specific elements and jurisdictional initiatives within the broader DER context.

Funds were identified in June 2008 to initiate the AICTEC agreed Learner Identity Management Framework (LIMF) scoping project. The project commenced its work in early July 2008.

The primary task for the project was to investigate whether and how the current manual SDTN system could be made electronic.

The final report of this research project was presented to AICTEC on 3 March 2009.

The report has been referred to the National Interoperability and Digital Architecture Advisory Group for further consideration.

In 2009, The National Interoperability and Digital Architecture Advisory Group (NIDAAG) commissioned a project to update the 2007 report: Interoperability Standards across the Australian Education and Training Sector conducted by Mr Peter Croger of Croger and Associates Pty Ltd. The updated report: Report of an Interoperability Audit and Assessment of the Education Sector was accepted by NIDAAG on 20 April 2010.

The project was undertaken in two stages. Stage one involved an audit and assessment of interoperability in the Australian education sector that sought to identify a number of nationally significant “ICT-in-education” opportunities under the Digital Education Revolution. Stage two involved the development of an “Interoperability Roadmap” that built on the recommendations of the audit and prescribed a way forward for interoperability initiatives in the Australian education sector.
